Geographystarts making sense.

Read landscapes, systems and maps, then explain the relationships behind what you observe.

B1 cm
0.10 kmground distance

Map cm × scale denominator ÷ 100 000 = ground distance in kilometres.

A CLOSER LOOK

What we can work on.

Click a topic to see a practical learning focus. We select the right depth for the learner, rather than treating every grade the same.

01Mapwork, scale and spatial interpretation+

Check scale, contour intervals, direction and units. Show the conversion and describe what the spatial pattern suggests.

02Climate, weather and atmospheric systems+

Link pressure, temperature, wind and moisture to the system shown. Explain a sequence rather than merely naming the feature.

03Landforms, rivers and physical processes+

Connect a landform to the process that creates or changes it. Use a diagram and distinguish erosion, transport and deposition.

04Settlement, development and data analysis+

Use map and data evidence to explain location, patterns and impacts. Separate a description of a pattern from the reason for it.

When extra support could help

Content questions go well, but mapwork, graphs or application questions are less secure.

Watch for: Mixing centimetres and kilometres in a scale calculation without a conversion.

A useful sign of progress: The learner can support a geographic explanation with a map feature, measurement or data point.

THE 3-QUESTION CHECK

Find your next “aha”.

Choose an answer, check the reasoning, then try again. Mistakes are useful information.

  • Use a map key and scale
  • Explain cause and effect
  • Use data and evidence in an answer
