GRADES 4–12 / SUBJECT STUDIO

Mathematicsstarts making sense.

Build the ideas behind the method, then practise applying them to unfamiliar problems.

xyy = 1x² + 0

Change a to stretch or flip the curve. Change b to move it vertically. At a = 0, the graph becomes a horizontal line.

A CLOSER LOOK

What we can work on.

Click a topic to see a practical learning focus. We select the right depth for the learner, rather than treating every grade the same.

01Number sense, fractions and percentages+

Use equivalent fractions, place value and proportional reasoning before relying on a memorised procedure. Check whether an answer is a sensible size.

02Algebra, equations and functions+

Move from simplifying expressions to solving equations, then connect a function rule to a table and graph. Explain what each variable represents.

03Geometry, measurement and trigonometry+

Draw and label the diagram, identify a relevant property or ratio and give reasons for each geometric step. Keep length, area and volume units distinct.

04Data, probability and exam technique+

Read a distribution, choose an appropriate summary and distinguish possible outcomes from favourable outcomes. Practise showing enough working to make the method clear.

When extra support could help

A learner can follow an example but feels stuck when the numbers or wording change.

Watch for: A correct method can still fail if signs, brackets or units are lost between steps.

A useful sign of progress: The learner can explain why a step works and solve a similar question with changed values.

THE 3-QUESTION CHECK

Find your next “aha”.

Choose an answer, check the reasoning, then try again. Mistakes are useful information.

  • Explain why a step works
  • Choose a method before calculating
  • Check an answer in context
